SUMMARY

Sprouter is a data-driven, sculptural prototype that explores how cities can produce food at the smallest scale—sprouts—through intelligent, localized systems. Developed by artist Studio Haseeb Ahmed in collaboration with agri-tech startup Sprout Dynamics, the project addresses the urgent challenge of urban food resilience.

Launched with an intensive kickoff in Sofia, Sprouter has evolved into a physical testbed for modular sprouting systems. Equipped with environmental sensors and camera modules, the prototype monitors humidity, temperature, and light—feeding data into an AI-managed system designed to optimize growth in real time.

Mentored by Carlo Ratti Associati, the project bridges scientific research and public imagination through storytelling, visual art, and hands-on prototyping. Workshops with students at Sint Joost School of Art and Design further expand engagement, grounding the work in critical education around food futures.

Sprouter contributes to the Hungry EcoCities initiative by demonstrating how urban farming can be both smart and sensorial—cultivating health, awareness, and sustainability one sprout at a time.
