Maria Mavrou

Ms. Maria Mavrou is a Programmes and Development Consultant and the Director of Losadeal Ltd Business Consultancy set up since 2014. Maria worked at Nicosia Municipality (NM) for more than 30 years as Sociologist, Planning Officer and Head of the European Affairs Office. She holds a BSc (First Class Honours) Degree in Sociology from the City University, London (City, University of London). Further to leading the European Affairs Office at NM, assigned with planning and coordinating the activity of the Municipality in the context of the European Union, including the identification of funding opportunities for the city’s priorities, the alignment of local with European policies and the Nicosia’s participation in EU funded programmes and European collaboration networks, she served as Vice-President of the Administrative Council of the European Office of Cyprus for 5 years (2007-2013) that brought together Cypriot organisations form a wide spectrum of sectors and interests, having contributed to its foundation.
Maria has extensive experience in drafting project proposals for funding from variable sources, programming, coordinating and implementing EU funded projects in a wide range of local policy areas. One of her major areas of expertise is integrated strategic and operational planning incorporating the poly-thematic exploitation of European Structural and Investment Funds in combination with national and other funding sources. She has successfully led and coordinated the formulation and documentation of the Integrated Sustainable Urban Development Strategy of Nicosia Municipality, as the basis of its bid for Structural Funds investments in its central area from the Programming Period 2014-2020 and more recently the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy of the Urban Area of Nicosia 2021-2030 encompassing 6 Municipalities of the wider urban area of Nicosia. Furthermore, for 20 years Maria was a member of the interdisciplinary bi-communal team of the pioneering Nicosia Master Plan: A technical collaboration between the Greek-Cypriot and the Turkish-Cypriot communities of Nicosia under the auspices of the UN, to jointly plan for the balanced development of the city and the regeneration of its declining Central Area and Historic Centre, preserving the prospect of its reunification, notwithstanding the ongoing division. Her expertise includes socio-economic profile and socio-economic impact studies in relation to development projects and the design and management of public information and stakeholder consultation campaigns. Maria has been recently appointed by the Council of Ministers as member of the new Board of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.
