Created during seven days and seven nights at Viana do Castelo’s historic tide mill, Sleeping with the Tides documents an embodied experiment in reorganising work and sleep around the movements of the tide and the cycle of the Moon. Combining moving image, journal entries and environmental observation, the film reflects on the lunar and tidal rhythms that once structured the tide miller’s labour and asks what changes when human time is guided by the Moon and water rather than the clock.
The screening will be accompanied by a live reading of journal entries recorded during the seven-day experiment, followed by an audience Q&A.

The event offers an opportunity to see how real-time ocean data is translated into sound, light, and physical patterns through cymatics, transforming invisible marine dynamics into a tangible, living experience. The artists will discuss the ideas, research, materials, and technologies behind the project, as well as its broader questions around our relationship with the ocean.

How does weather become data, and how can that data become an artwork?
Led by Kerrie O’Leary, this participatory workshop introduces some of the environmental sensing tools and methods used during Syzygy of the Tides. Beginning with a walk through CMIA’s Urban Ecological Park, participants will explore how local weather and environmental conditions can be observed, measured and recorded, including data gathered through the weather station installed at the historic tide mill.
Returning indoors, Kerrie will demonstrate how measurements such as temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind and rainfall can move from sensors into datasets, code and visual forms. The session offers an accessible introduction to environmental sensing, creative coding and data visualisation, with no previous coding experience or laptop required.

At the Praia Norte tidal pool, Boca de Sal proposes a food ritual guided by seaweed. Enter the water. Feel the cold, the wind, the rocks underfoot. Encounter the seaweed growing around us. Taste it. Seaweed runs through the entire experience: as a living presence, an ingredient in our floating kitchen, material transformed into ceramics, and a means of bringing back the gestures and knowledge of this amphibious culture, which for generations lived from the meeting of sea and land. Once gathered to nourish agricultural fields, seaweed is now revisited as food, material and symbol. Between the natural and the constructed, the biological and the cultural, the past and the present, the performance opens a space to rehearse a new relationship with the sea and with seaweed — one that begins on the skin and reaches the mouth.

On 27 September, between 9:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., a Sensory Walk will take place, starting at Veiga de São Simão.
The walk, covering approximately 7 km, will be facilitated by Pedro Matias and Tatiana Rosa, artists-in-residence as part of the S+T+ARTS Aqua Motion project, and will form one of the presentation moments of the project Attuning to Absence.
Developed over the past year, the project seeks to reimagine the Lima River through practices of embodied listening and ecological artistic research, exploring new ways of relating communities to river ecosystems.

Attuning to Absence emerges from sustained, place-based engagement with the Lima River: repeated walks and field visits across seasons and tides, conversations with local communities and attentive observation of the river’s changing conditions.

What is S+T+ARTS, and how can collaboration between Science, Technology and the Arts help address the challenges facing our territories?

An experimental workshop based on storytelling and participatory artistic practices. By exploring local narratives, it aims to foster an emotional connection with water and promote environmental awareness through shared experiences among participants.

Are you using a private water source in your home such as a well, a mine, a spring, a reservoir? Come test your water and share your water experience with us!
Collaborative, hands-on creative workshop, exploring water quality and social ecologies. Each participant (from one household) is invited to bring with them a sample of their water from the well/ mine/reservoir/spring to be tested at the workshop. Instructions for sample collection will be sent to registered participants. We will test certain water qualities together and explore the results through a collaborative installation and learn about our water relationships between us, our communities and the environment.

Boca de Sal is a transdisciplinary project that explores the biocultural heritage of sargassum-gathering communities. It brings together artistic practice, gastronomic creation, scientific knowledge and lived experience to investigate the relationships of interaction between people, seaweed and the coastal landscape.
